Description

Ideally located on the edge of the Ngorongoro crater rim, Rhino Lodge offers a perfect base from which to explore the Ngorongoro crater and its surroundings. With 24 comfortable ensuite rooms, a cozy living space, friendly local staff and generous African-inspired meals, Rhino Lodge welcomes guests to Africa’s most remarkable game park.

Accommodation

There are 24 guest rooms, all with verandah overlooking a stretch of high montane forest. Each room has its own shower, toilet and hand basin. To keep away the cold each room has a wood-burning stove, and hot water bottles can be filled if you want one. In the bar/dining-room there are two large fires which are a natural focus where our guests like to meet and exchange stories of the day. Hot, tasty food is available from the buffet. And after dinner our Maasai staff may entertain you with some traditional dancing.

Location

Coming from the East, Rhino is the first lodge after entering the Ngorongoro Conservation Area through the Loduare Gate. From the lodge it is only 20 minutes to reach the Seneto descent road into the Crater, and the Lerai ascent road is less than 5 minutes drive away.

GPS COORDINATES:
3° 15’ 25” S
35° 31’ 31” E

The lodge is situated at an altitude of 2,200 metres, a few hundred metres back from the rim of the Crater. What it loses in terms of outlook over the Crater, it more than makes up for with its views of untouched high montane forest with Mount Oldeani (3,200 metres) dominating the background, and Mount Makarot in the distance (3130 metres).

Stretching across 8,300 square km of dense forest, vast grasslands, and a multitude of stunning craters and lakes, the Ngorongoro Conservation Area is home to the famous Ngorongoro Crater. The crater floor is a natural sanctuary for thousands of wildlife species, and is one of the world’s last remaining areas where the endangered black rhino continue to breed and thrive naturally in the wild.

The conservation area is also kind to its human populations: its carefully managed multiple land use philosophy ensures the peaceful co-existence of the Maasai and the natural environment, with about 42,000 Maasai peoples still living inside the conservation area.

Getting there

Rhino Lodge is about a 45-minute drive from the small town of Karatu and an easy 3 hours from Arusha. Coming from the Serengeti, it is about an hour and a half’s drive from the Naabi Hill gate.

GPS COORDINATES
3° 15’ 25” S
35° 31’ 31” E

The nearest airstrip, serviced with scheduled flights by Coastal Aviation, is Manyara, about 45 minutes’ drive from the lodge. Coastal Aviation operates a daily service from Arusha with connecting flights from both Zanzibar and Dar es Salaam. Guests can also fly-in from other parts of the country: Selous, Ruaha, Serengeti and Mwanza.

Rivertrees Country Inn

Description

A very pretty, down-to-earth lodge set just outside Arusha, Rivertrees Country Inn is a popular base for safaris into northern Tanzania. A central staging post for northern safaris, most safari itineraries through this area will include time in Arusha, and travellers could do a whole a lot worse than a night or two at this owner-run lodge.

OVERVIEW

Set back from the main road, in a mature, 10 acre garden, on the banks of the Usa River, River Trees is an ex-colonial property, and retains all the charm and individuality of a private home.

Consisting of two central buildings and 34 rooms, the farmhouse has been beautifully restored, and the main area – lounge, dining room, bar, swimming pool, extensive veranda and outdoor seating facilities – overlooks a classically upcountry garden, complete with prolific bougainvillea, fly-catchers flitting through the bushes and a clutch of very old, very big trees. Indeed, it is worth visiting Rivertrees for the garden alone. Alive with colour and a range of hibiscus, oleander and candelabra, it is not uncommon to see – as we did during our last visit – the likes of casqued hornbills flying across the lawns.

FOOD AND SERVICE

Inside, the lodge’s interiors are designed to fit with the function of individual rooms. The bar, a highland throwback, is rough and ready, the lounge luxuriously comfortable, and the dining room a touch more formal. Tea is served on the open-veranda, and an informal atmosphere is encouraged by sprawling sofas, and by the opportunity to come together with the rest of River Trees’s guests. The service is a delight, and the food, prepared in an open kitchen, good country nosh – is just right.

ACCOMMODATION

There are 34 rooms: 30 Garden Rooms (including the Farm House’s additional 4 rooms), 2 River Cottages and the River House, which is 2 rooms. The standard rooms, reasonably recently refurbished, are simple, very comfortable and beautifully kept. Varying in size and style, and not in the least decadent, they are very much in keeping with the traditional feel of an old home. Characterised by whitewashed walls, polished concrete floors and clean, functional bathrooms, each of the standard rooms possesses a double or twin bed, table and seats and veranda.

The cottages are similar, only larger and positioned away by the river, and offer guests complimentary hot drinks facilities & an outside shower, as well as a roaring fireplace. River House – two en-suite bedrooms, a separate lounge, and extensive veranda – would suit a group. For those after a purely traditional colonial accommodation stay, the main house’s old parquet floors, ramshackle seating and huge fireplace ticks all boxes. Across the accommodation, the internet is quick and notably reliable.

ACTIVITIES

Rivertrees boasts numerous activities, including horse riding, bird watching, cultural visits and plantation walks.
